Ethos 2026 is a virtual conference celebrating the rhythmic heartbeat and cultural ethos of Hellenic folk dance and music. It unites researchers, dancers, musicians, and enthusiasts to present and discuss research initiatives that preserve and innovate Greece and Cyprus’ rich traditions. Through virtual presentations and dialogue, the conference amplifies the spirit of Hellenic culture in a dynamic, accessible online platform. 

Ethos 2026: Rhythm in Motion: The Heartbeat of Hellenic Folk Dance and Music invites, dance directors, researchers, dancers, musicians, and enthusiasts to submit abstracts for our virtual conference. We seek contributions that explore the ethos, and cultural significance of Hellenic folk dance and music, fostering dialogue and advancing preservation efforts. Below are the four conference tracks for abstract submissions, each with a description and suggested topics.

Track 1: Rhythmic Interplay: Music in the Hellenic Culture

This track examines the emphasis on music within Hellenic Culture. Research into the vast musical traditions of Greece and their relationship to dance are encouraged.

Track 2: Historical Roots: Unearthing Traditions

This track invites historical research on origins, development, and transformations of Hellenic folk dance and music. New and emerging, as well as in process field research projects are also encouraged.

Track 3: Maintaining Community and Identity in the Diaspora

This track focuses on how Hellenic folk dance and music is embraced by the global community. Topics include: Diaspora experiences, social issues, and evolution of traditions in the diaspora today.

Track 4: Preservation

This track focuses on methods to document and preserve folk dance and music through archival and ethnographic research. Submissions should explore tools, challenges, and innovations in capturing traditions for future generations.

Submission Guidelines

  • Abstract Length: 250–300 words.

  • Format: Clearly state the track, research question/topic/idea, and relevance to Hellenic folk dance/music

  • Presentation Types: Please identify your preferred presentation type in your abstract submission 

    • 15-minute virtual poster presentation

    • 45-min live virtual lecture with Q&A

    • 45-min live virtual panel 

  • Deadline: October 1, 2025, 11:59p EST, notification of acceptance to present by October 31, 2025
